Event Write-Up

For our final Cascadia event of the season, about 30 members gathered at Howard Miller Steelhead Park, a very nice park in a beautiful setting. We camped right on the banks of the Skagit River where the salmon were spawning and the river was running very high. The trees were decked out in their fall colors while a bit of snow dusted the top of the Cascade foothills nearby.

Friday night brought buckets of rain to add to the river and wind which knocked down a big tree and knocked out the power in the entire campground and surrounding area. We all awoke to dark and chilly rigs, and being the modern women that we are, it took some of us quite a while to figure out what the problem was. Even then someone headed for the clubhouse to make coffee for us and others of us followed with our coffee cups, not thinking clearly without said coffee in our systems. We were just getting started with our annual business meeting when someone jokingly said, “Why don’t we turn on some lights in here”, and flipped the light switch on. Much to our amazement and amusement, the power was back on.

One of the main events of the business meeting was the election of officers for next year. Cheryl Edman is the new President Elect, Nancy Gerou will be the treasurer, Elaine Ploegstra will be the registrar, Patty Lebbert will be our secretary and Christine Taylor  will continue as our events coordinator. Our president for the 2010 season is Mary Schoenfeldt. The officers for 2009 were thanked for their service this year and people were encouraged to step up and volunteer for some task next season.

The afternoon turned sunny as we enjoyed the Halloween costume pet parade and then took advantage of the beautiful day with a variety of activities. Some went for a drive to enjoy the fall colors, some walked the nature trail at the park, some carved pumpkins and did crafts, and others visited with friends or relaxed in their rigs.

Saturday evening was our regular potluck followed by a Halloween costume contest. We saw everything from hippies to nuns. In fact “Maria and Mother Superior” brought on a “Sound of Music” sing along, inspired by some fine lip-syncing by Mother Superior. (My sides are still aching from laughing!) We topped all this silliness off with ice cream sundaes and then people wandered back to their rigs, or to the campfire, or stayed around to play some games.

Sunday morning was our final rig christening and farewells to friends we won’t see until next season. We hope the winter goes by quickly so we can get back together for more fun and adventures.
